Enabling the Distributed Family Tree

This is the official research blog for the Distributed Family Tree, an open network of genealogical data and metadata.  In a nutshell, the big idea is that we can combine all available genealogical information on the Internet into a single distributed network.  The foundation for this network is the substance of the Master's Thesis that I am currently working on.

BYU Recruiting Propaganda

This Friday we (the Good Doctor and I) are plastering the stairwells of the computer science building at BYU with propaganda.  Our goal is to attract a handful of bright undergrads to join the project and tackle the myriad of features we need to make Genesis a reality.  We’re hoping to recruit volunteers now and possibly create a special projects class for them in the Spring (netting both them and myself some much needed credit!).

The bottom of the flier gives the web address of a page that describes some of the sub-projects we’re most interested in at the moment:

  • GEDCOM import/export
  • Individual and pedigree views
  • Additional agents
  • Valhalla

We’re also open to the possibility of any other sub-projects that would benefit the project vision.  This is basically a choose-your-own-adventure.

But we aren’t just looking for BYU undergrads; anyone with an interest in making this a reality is more than welcome to contribute!
