Enabling the Distributed Family Tree

This is the official research blog for the Distributed Family Tree, an open network of genealogical data and metadata.  In a nutshell, the big idea is that we can combine all available genealogical information on the Internet into a single distributed network.  The foundation for this network is the substance of the Master's Thesis that I am currently working on.

For a while now the Good Doctor has been asking for a way to see the raw data in Genesis visually (as opposed to textually).  I kept putting it off for the same reason that I haven’t done a pedigree viewer yet: it’s a lot of work.  I finally buckled down to learn the Eclipse Graphical Editing Framework (GEF).  I have to tell you, GEF is one beast of a framework!  Fortunately I stumbled across Mylar Zest, which makes it significantly easier.  I’m really quite pleased with the results:

Unfortunately, Zest isn’t as fully featured as I would like, so for the pedigree viewer I’ll have to return to the GEF beast.
